More about Jazz…

Yes, we’ll still on the topic of Jazz! Christy Smith was another performer at the Shades of Pink event that we held at 2902 Gallery back on the 11th of May. I was lucky to be able to photograph Christy recently. Christy is known to be a phenominally versatile bassist from California who is as comfortable on electric bass as he is on the upright, and as happy to be playing hard-nosed funk grooves. A graduate from Fullerton University, California, Christy spent several years touring with symphony orchestras and big bands appearing in all corners of the globe with artists such as Stevie Wonder and Sarah Vaughan before forming his own outfit playing jazz and R&B. He has also performed with Billy Higgins, Don Cherry, Ed Blackwell, Charlie Haden, Alphonse Mouzon, Eddie Harris and Harold Land among others. Since 1993 he has been based in Singapore where he has become a major institution of musical excellence and is in no small way responsible for the emergence of a new standard of jazz musician in our lovely city. He can be found almost any day of the week performing and recording with his band Chromazone, and often with such artists as Wynton Marsalis, Ernie Watts, Eric Marienthal and Jeremy Monteiro.
